The free-standing entertainment center — a hulking piece of furniture with visible wires and a TV balanced on top — is one of the great aesthetic problems of the modern NYC apartment. Custom built-in entertainment millwork solves it completely.
What a Custom Entertainment Center Does
A properly designed built-in entertainment unit integrates the television, all AV components, gaming systems, vinyl or media collections, books, and decorative objects into a single architectural wall element. All wiring runs internally. All components live behind ventilated cabinet doors. The TV floats on the wall with nothing visible around it. The result reads as intentionally designed architecture, not as "place to put the TV."
Design Options
Full Wall Floor-to-Ceiling
The most dramatic option — the entire wall becomes a built-in composition of shelves, cabinets, and the TV. Highly impactful in living rooms of any size. Adds perceived square footage by organizing and purposing the wall.
Floating Media Console with Flanking Storage
A wall-mounted media console with flanking upper shelves creates an airier look — the floor beneath the console remains visible, making the room feel larger. Works well in smaller NYC living rooms.
Fireplace Surround Integration
Many NYC apartments have decorative or non-functional fireplaces. Building a custom entertainment unit that integrates the fireplace as a central design element — TV above, storage on either side, fireplace surround as the focal base — is one of the most successful millwork designs available for pre-war Manhattan apartments.
Cable Management
All wiring should run through pre-drilled channels within the millwork to an accessible power center — a recessed outlet strip, surge protector, and cable management system within the cabinet. Plan for ethernet, HDMI, power, and any future wiring needs before the millwork is built. Retrofitting is painful.
